Quick answer

Learn the bar first, then the run: pick an agent by the dance floor, start every run from the cliff edge, and spend early upgrades on weapon damage. Faith, Hatchmons and set items are the three systems that carry the late floors.

What you are actually doing in Neon Abyss 2

Neon Abyss 2 is a run-based roguelike shooter from Veewo Games: pick an agent, descend into the Abyss floor by floor, clear rooms, stack items until your build breaks the game — then lose to a god, respawn at the Blackdog bar, and go again. 1.0 adds four-player online co-op and the new Titan, Theia.

Your first ten minutes: the bar

Every run starts at the Blackdog bar. Learn the room:

  • Pick an agent on the Agent screen near the dance floor. Nik is available from the start; every other agent unlocks by completing that agent's own task.
  • Check the Task screen next to it — it lists what each locked agent wants; progress is cumulative, so failed runs still count.
  • Test weapons in the Training Room, through the door downstairs. Try any unlocked weapon against static, moving or multiple targets before committing to a build.
  • Everything else — Evolution tree, Zapbit cosmetics, the Supporter Pack music player — can wait a few runs.

Run structure, in one breath

A run is a sequence of floors. Each floor is rooms — combat, shop, challenge, treasure, Faith and temples — linked by teleporters, ending in a boss. Later floors gate a Manager before the next stretch; after it you pick your next route at the safehouse portals. Some routes only open when you meet a condition (holding a Faith bar, carrying enough Hatchmons), which is how the late-game boss chain works — the bosses guide maps it all out.

Resources work like a survival-economy minigame: coins buy, keys open, bombs reveal, eggs hatch into pets, Crystals pay for premium interactions, and hearts are your life. Bosses in the current build only drop items that directly boost agent attributes — damage, attack speed, range, projectile count, heart containers — so early power spikes are more predictable than at Early Access launch.

Controls and settings worth changing

  • Wonder Jars (Hexjars): press Q to stow or deploy the jar, F to unleash it. Gamepad default: Y to switch, RB to use.
  • Graphics and frame rate are set independently in 1.0: Medium/High quality on PC, plus 60, 120 or uncapped frame rate.
  • Visual clutter: attack and follower effects have transparency controls in Settings, so you can dial the chaos down.
  • Controller vibration and screen shake are separate sliders, and normal attacks vibrate less than before.
  • Infinite Energy exists as an accessibility tool — the devs warn it guts the difficulty and the fun.

Where to spend your first upgrades

  1. Your weapon. Every upgrade screen offers two stat choices, or Temper to add an affix instead. Early on, tempering toward one repeatable effect beats spreading stats around.
  2. Blackdog Patches. A boss kill earns one Patch charge; three charges trade for a starter bundle; a failed run grants all three instantly. You can't earn charges while a Patch is active.
  3. Evolution points. Meta-progression at the bar unlocks systems and smoothing upgrades. Your Blackdog level rises as you play — achievements mark levels 2, 10, 20, 30 and 50.

The three systems that carry late runs

  • Faith — fill the meter, visit temples, spend the rewards. Faith gates bosses: carry a Faith bar into Apollo and the run continues to Eris. Details in the bosses guide.
  • Hatchmons — eggs hatch into little companions with their own health bars. Two of the same fuse into a Super Pet. See the Hatchmon guide.
  • Set items — completed sets multiply builds (egg-to-shield conversion, jump-mark turrets, wisp storms). The builds guide breaks down which ones matter now.

Common questions after the tutorial

  • How do I start a new run? From the bar — talk to the run start point.
  • Why can't I open the crystal chest? It wants a Crystal cost or a filled meter — read the interaction prompt first.
  • The performance was rough in Early Access — is it fixed? Patched — 1.0 splits quality from frame rate so you can tune both.
  • Does 1.0 wipe progress? No — saves carry over, and pre-1.0 feats were granted retroactively.
